His first film was Thookku Thookki He was the dominant singer till  the late seventies. He used to sing in distinct styles for the two great heroes of  his time, MGR and Sivaji, and came to be identified as their voice. His voice was majestic, resonant and very stable at even very high pitches.The  film songs which he sang for M.G.R.  were used by the latter as an effective political propaganda tool.


A.M.Raja

A.M.Raja's first Tamil film was Samsaram (1951), he sang all the songs .His first Hindi film was Bahut Din Huye, the next year he started singing for Telugu films also.His duets with Jikki (whom he married later) were roaring hits.In 1958 Raja turned to Music direction, Sobha(Telugu) was his first film as a music director. Pelli Kaanuka(1960) established him as a music director. He has sang  about 10,000 songs in different languages and has directed the music for about  100 films. He died in a train accident on April 8th 1989  at  Valliur in Tirunelveli District.


PB Srinivaas

Prativaada Bhayankara Srinivaas, shortly PBS, is a truly multifaceted talent to hit the South Indian Film World. Though he hails from Andhra, he is very famous in Kannada and Tamil Film Music. He became very popular in Tamil after his beautiful renderings "Vanithaamaniye", "Kannale pesipesi kollaathe" in the film Adutha veettu penn. Thereafter he has given many many memorable songs e.g."Mayakkamaa kalakkamaa (Sumai thaangi), "Nilave ennidam nerungaathe (Raamu) "Chinna chinna kannanukku"(Vaazhkkai padagu), etc. especially with the Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy and Kannadhaasan combination.He became popular in Hindi  through the  film Main Bhi Ladki Hoon songs like "Chanda Se Hoga Wo Pyara", "Phulon Se Wo Nyaara". He has to his credit more than 100 all time hits.


S.P.Balasubramaniam

SPB as he is popularly known, was first introduced in Telugu films. His first song in Tamil was "Iyarkai enum "  for the film Santhi Nillayam, this was followed by  the song "Ayiram Nilave Vaa", for the film Adimai Penn ,  For a long he was not in the forefront of Tamil film music, though he was popular in Telugu films. With the entry of Illayaraja SPB's voice too blossomed and today he is  one of the most popular singers in India . He has sung   songs in almost all the Indian language films. He has directed the music for a couple of films, and he has  also acted in some films.


K.J.Jesudas

Jesudas is very famous for his classical   music based film songs, He   is also an active carnatic concert artist.He is the most popular  singer in the Malayalam film world since his hits for the film Chemmeen hits and is quite popular in Tamil films also. His first song in Tamil was"Neeyum bommai" in the film Bommai.Apart from Tamil and Malayalam he sung songs in Hindi, Kannada and many other Indian languages . He has given 100s of all time hits in many languages. He has won the National Award and  a number of   State Awards. He has settled in the U.S.A. and now he shuttles between India and U.S.A and continues to be active in film music as well as Carnatic music.


P.Susheela

Popularly called as the Lata Mangeshkar of the South her first film was the   Telugu film Kannatalli and her first playback in Tamil was for the film Petra Thai .Her melodious voice caught the attention of other music directors and she became a much sought after playback singer. There was no Tamil movie without songs by her. Susheela has sung for all the South Indian language films. Her songs in movies like Pava Manippu, Palum Pazhamum , Parthal Pasitheerum, Uthama Puthiran , etc. still remain favourites of film music lovers. She sang effortlessly and with comprehension and while singing brought out the depth of the lyrics. Susheela has sung a lot of songs under the music direction of composers Viswanathan-Ramamurthi, and has rendered the maximum of songs with T. M. Soundararajan.She is the recipient of the National Award for female playback singer in 1969, 1971, 1977, 1983, 1984 and has also bagged the Tamil Nadu State Award, the Kerala State Government Award and from her home State Andhra Pradesh she has won the Best Playback Artiste Award given by the Madras Film Fans Associations and during the Indo-Pakistan war she entertained the jawans at the war front. The Government of Tamil Nadu has honoured her with the title of ``Kalaimamani'' and again in the year 1991 she won the Tamil Nadu State Government Award as best playback artiste for 1990-91. In August 1992 Susheela was conferred the honorary Doctorate at Washington, U.S. by the North American Alumni Association. She has sung so many songs that she herself  is not sure of the number of songs rendered by her( Susheela in an Interview in the English News Paper "The Hindu"). She is singinging in films for nearly four decades.
